Why are Hotel Mattresses So Comfortable and Where to Get Them?

A good night's sleep is an essential element for maintaining physical and mental health, and a comfortable mattress plays a pivotal role in achieving this. We all know that the top hotels pamper their guests so well, down to the type of bedding used in the room, to ensure they are well rested. Resting well means you get to start your day on a good note, and you feel good about yourself. With so many options available, choosing the right mattress for your needs can present you an overwhelming amount of pressure. Let’s make it easier by exploring the different types of mattress and find out how you can bring the hotel comfort home.

There are four main types of mattresses: innerspring, memory foam, latex, and hybrid.

Innerspring Mattresses

More commonly known as coil mattresses, these are the most traditional type of mattress. They consist of steel coils as the core, topped with layers of foam or other materials for plush comfort. Innerspring mattresses tend to be less expensive than others, but may not offer as much support or pressure relief. They are also likely to have a shorter lifespan than other types of mattresses1. However, these type of mattresses are great if you enjoy the slight bounciness of it which gives off the feeling of floating in dreamland when you sink yourself onto one.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Made from a type of foam that adapts to the shape of your body, these mattresses provide a more customised support and pressure relief. These mattresses are known for their ability to reduce motion transfer, making them a good choice for couples or siblings by dampening each other's movements during the night. Memory foam mattresses are also a great choice for people with back aches, by conforming to the shape of your back and alleviate pressure on the spine. Memory foam mattresses have the tendency to retain heat2, so if you are a warm sleeper, but enjoy the enveloping embrace that memory foam mattresses can offer, use a cooling bedsheet such as Tencel or Bamboo.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses are another popular mattress due to its durability and bounce. Made from natural or synthetic rubber, these mattresses provide a supportive and responsive sleep surface and are great for those who prefer a firmer feel. Latex mattresses are good at regulating temperature, making them a good choice for warm sleepers. Latex mattress are good at motion isolation as well and hence reduces movement disturbance for those sharing beds with their loved ones or their pets3. They are also naturally more mould resistant than other mattresses, which is ideal for humid climates like in Singapore. The long life span and firm support capability contributes to the higher cost of the mattress, but nevertheless, it can still be an upgrade worth splurging on.

Hybrid Mattresses

Lastly we have hybrid mattresses, which are driven by our needs for multiple characteristics found across different types of mattresses. Hybrid mattresses are a combination of innerspring and foam layers and offer the best of both worlds. These mattresses tend to have a more traditional feel and offer good support and pressure relief. Hybrid mattresses are also great temperature regulators, so warm sleepers can put them into their list of considerations. Because these mattresses are a hybrid, there is no absolute description of their characteristics. As such, you get a wide spectrum to choose from that can allow you to find one that fits the closest to your ideal kind of comfort. The possibilities are endless and they can almost feel like a customised one to your individual preference and needs.

ezCozy Dual-sided Mattress

Epitex’s ezCozy Mattress is a form of hybrid mattress with additional features: dual-sided function and an anti-static fabric surface. By being dual-sided, this means you get a plush mattress on one side and a firm mattress on the other side. If you are undecided on whether you had like a plush or firm mattress in the long run, this offers you the best of both worlds by allowing you to flip to the preferred side. The inbuilt anti-static surface further aids in falling into deeper sleep by releasing static charges from your body. This aids in relieving pressure and stress and enables you to unwind and relax much easier at night. With tension relieved, you are able to rest better and wake refresh, landing yourself in a better mood every morning. This mattress comes in 4 standard sizes in Singapore: single, super-single, queen and king.

Shopping For A Mattress

When shopping for a mattress, consider these key factors. Firstly, think about your preferred sleeping position and choose a mattress that will support your body in that position. For example, side sleepers may prefer a softer mattress to alleviate pressure on the hips and shoulders, while stomach sleepers may need a firmer mattress to keep their spine aligned. A softer mattress will be better paired with a plush pillow and a firmer mattress will go better with a firmer pillow, to best retain your body’s natural resting position.

Next, consider your body type and weight. The same plush mattress may feel different between a lighter and a heavier person. If you are prone to allergies, take an additional look at the materials used and opt for one that is hypoallergenic or made from natural materials.

When trying out a mattress at the store, spend at least 15-20 minutes lying on it in your preferred sleeping position to get a good sense of its comfort and support. If you're shopping with a partner, both of you should try out the mattress together to ensure it's comfortable for both of you. Take turns to wiggle around on the mattress to have a feel of the degree of motion isolation it offers, especially if this is important to you.

Making Home Feel Like a Luxurious Hotel

If you have room in your bedroom, go for bigger mattresses. For example, if you have your own bed, this is your sign to upgrade from single to queen size or larger mattresses. The abundance of bed space allows for more natural movement on the bed and that contributes to more comfortable sleep at night. If you are sharing your bed, a queen or king size mattress will definitely increase your comfort by reducing the chances of disturbance due to fidgeting at night. And doesn’t it sound heavenly to be able to roll about in a big mattress?
