Both TENCEL™ Lyocell and TENCEL™ Modal are part of the same certified family — two fibres, each with their own feel. The questions below will help you understand what makes them special, and find the ideal one for you.

What is TENCEL™, and why does the certification matter?

TENCEL™ is a registered brand by Lenzing AG, an Austrian company recognised globally for responsible fibre production. Both Lyocell and Modal sit under this brand. What the certification means for you: the fibre's origin is traceable, the production process is verified, and third-party standards — including EU Ecolabel and OEKO-TEX® — are met. It's not just a label. It's accountability from forest to fabric.

I've seen "Tencel" used to describe many lyocell bed sheets — are they the same?

Not exactly. Think of it like Panadol vs paracetamol — same ingredient, but one is a certified brand. Lyocell is the fibre type. TENCEL™ is Lenzing's branded, certified version of it. When you see TENCEL™ on the label, the origin and production process are verified and traceable to the Lenzing company.

Are TENCEL™ fibres safe for sensitive or eczema-prone skin?

Yes. All TENCEL™-certified fibres carry OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification — meaning the fabric has been tested and verified to be free from harmful substances. The closed-loop production process also avoids toxic chemical discharge. Gentle on skin by design, not just by claim.

Are TENCEL™  bed sheets eco-friendly?

Meaningfully so. The wood sources — eucalyptus for Lyocell, beechwood for Modal — are sustainably managed and fast-growing. Lenzing's production recycles over 99% of the water and solvents used, in a closed-loop process. Both fibres are also biodegradable.

Are TENCEL™  bed sheets suitable for children or babies?

Yes. The OEKO-TEX® certification means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances — making it safe for sensitive and young skin. The smooth fibre surface and moisture-managing properties are also gentle on children who tend to sleep warm or have reactive skin.

How do I care for TENCEL™  bed sheets?

Both Lyocell and Modal share the same simple care routine:
 

Gentle cycle · 30–40°C · mild detergent
No bleach. No fabric softener. Air-dry or tumble dry on low.


One note for Modal: handle gently when wet as it can stretch slightly if pulled or wrung. Otherwise, both are easy-care fabrics that reward a little attention with years of softness.

How long will TENCEL™  bed sheets last?

With proper care, a quality TENCEL™ set will last several years. Lyocell is inherently strong and resistant to thinning. Modal is resilient when handled correctly — especially important to avoid high heat or wringing when wet. Both age well and maintain their feel far longer than many standard fabrics.
