Lucid Dreams: Explanation, Tips, and Benefits

A lucid dream is a dream in which we are simply aware of dreaming (hence the term "lucid"). We know that we are sleeping soundly in our bed and what we see is only a creation. The dreamer is able to control his movements and everything happening around him. From flying to swimming under water, everything becomes possible. Your mind creates your own limitless world, leaving you with a feeling of pure freedom and euphoria.

This phenomenon occurs often involuntarily, generally during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase of sleep where your brain’s activity increases, occurring in cycles every hour and a half. Only 55% of people will have a lucid dreaming experience in their lifetime, and less than 1 in 4 experience it once a month or more.



If you want to learn to lucid dream, you should know that it is entirely possible for anyone. With a little time and experience you will become successful at taking control of your dreams.

 A few exercises can be practiced regularly to gradually achieve it.

  • Keep a dream journal: Write down your dreams just after waking up and think about them before sleeping in order to practice remembering what you dreamed about more often.
  • Go back to sleep after awakening from a dream. Attaining a state of lucidity is easier after a return to REM sleep. Reminisce your last dream and try to hold these thoughts until you fall asleep once again. You might be surprised by the outcome.

After all, the most important aspect to get results is confidence. Your brain needs affirmation. Believing that it is possible and that you can achieve it, will lead you to this unique experience.



  • Having lucid dreams regularly is not without interest and can bring you many long-term benefits, such as:
  • Learning to manage your emotions and develop your confidence. In a nightmare, the dreamer understands that it is as harmless as a horror movie, rendering it less scary. It is great way to face and overcome your fears.
  • Developing your creativity by controlling and building what happens in the dream.
  • Understanding how to draw specific aspects of your life that might help you to cope better with certain difficulties, for example emotions, social adaptation, etc.
  • Strengthening cognitive memory and improving real-life problem solving by enhancing focus and precision. 

Although lucid dreams remain a very attractive and exhilarating experience, you need to understand that it requires time, dedication and focus to achieve such a state. And it is important to know that it is not an answer to your personal problems. It might help in certain situations but if you’re looking to improve your life, concentrate on your own reality and face it with the help of your peers.
